GARDENING CALENDAR – DECEMBER

Our potted and cut Christmas trees are now available – choose from the popular Nordmann 'non-drop' Firs and Premier Norway Spruces – all best quality and British grown.

In the shop there are plenty of gift ideas and Christmas cards. And if you still can't decide what to buy there's always National Garden Gift Vouchers which can be used at 2,000 places in the country.

With the help of Haverhill Lions we also host a popular Santa's grotto.

Planting

Continue planting bare-root trees, hedging and roses.

Plant out new rhubarb crowns.

Things to do in the garden

Continue clearing fallen leaves from lawns and gutters and compost them.

Empty compost bins and mix content thoroughly.

Tidy up lawn edges.

Make sure all outside pots are protected from frost. Gathering them in groups helps protect the roots of the plants inside.

If necessary brush snow off evergreen trees and shrubs.

Plan next year’s veg garden.

Cover winter brassicas with netting to keep hungry pigeons at bay.

Pruning

Cut back perennials damaged by frost.

You can start winter pruning wisteria, cutting back the last season’s new growth to the first two or three buds. Japanese maples and vines should be pruned no later than now.

Prune grapevines while they are dormant.

Don’t dead-head hydrangeas. The dead flower heads are a good protection against frost for new buds.

Watering

Check greenhouse plants and water sparingly if required.

Turn off outside water supply and insulate taps and pipes.
